Transportation in Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng's transport scene centers on three practical choices: songthaews (shared pickup trucks) that run the main drag and out to the caves, motorbike rentals for independent exploring, and the occasional tuk-tuk for door-to-door comfort. Songthaews are dirt-cheap and leave when full, wave one down anywhere along Route 13, but they thin out after dark, so budget for a tuk-tuk ride back from the tubing bars. Motorbikes give you freedom to hit the Blue Lagoon and viewpoints on your own clock. Check brakes and helmet quality before you leave the shop. First-timer heads-up: the "VIP bus" sold by some guesthouses is often just a cramped minivan with extra stops. Stick to the larger coaches that depart from the main bus station on the north edge of town, they're only slightly pricier and far more comfortable for the windy mountain roads. If you're flying in, the nearest airport is in Vientiane. From there, the airport shuttle drops you at the capital's northern bus terminal where frequent coaches make the three-hour run to Vang Vieng.
