Helpful Tips
Rent a motorbike from shops near the main bus station for easy access to Blue Lagoon and Tham Phu Kham cave
Songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) depart from the old airstrip area for destinations like Tham Nam cave and Kaeng Nyui waterfall
Tuk-tuks typically wait near the tubing center on the main road for short trips within town
Book minivan tickets to Luang Prabang or Vientiane from travel agencies along the main street rather than at the bus station for better rates
Common Scams to Avoid
Tuk-tuk drivers at the Vang Vieng bus drop-off (often used as the de-facto airport shuttle from Vientiane) quote a flat 'tourist price' that is 2, 3 times the going local rate. Insist on seeing the meter or agree a fare in advance by checking the current local rate with your guesthouse.
Motorbike-rental stalls next to the bus station demand large cash deposits and later claim non-existent scratches. Photograph the bike from every angle with the staff member in the shot and use the booking widget below for reputable rental partners instead.
Minivan drivers on the Vientiane, Vang Vieng route sometimes stop at a 'visa checkpoint' and collect an unofficial 20,000 kip 'processing fee'; politely refuse, show your already-stamped passport, and remind them you have the official receipt.
