Where to Stay Tonight

Riverside (east bank) (Vang Vieng Eco Lodge or Easy Go Hostel)

Caves & Peaks

Phangern Cave & Viewpoint
Start a challenging but rewarding caving expedition followed by a hike to one of Vang Vieng's most spectacular sunset viewpoints.
Morning
Explore Phangern (Silver) Cave

3-4 hours $10-15 (including guide)
Arrange directly with a guide at the cave entrance or through your accommodation; a guide is highly recommended for safety.

Afternoon
Hike to Pha Ngern Viewpoint

1.5-2 hours (round trip) $2 (entry fee)
Start the hike no later than 4:00 PM to reach the top for sunset. Bring water and wear proper shoes.
Evening
Night Market & Local Eats
After the hike, head to Vang Vieng Night Market for cheap, delicious street food like grilled meats, papaya salad (Tam Mak Hoong), and fresh fruit shakes.

Where to Stay Tonight

Town Center (Vang Vieng Boutique Hotel or Vang Vieng Rock Backpackers Hostel)

Central location makes it easy to access the night market, restaurants, and is a short trip to the viewpoint trailhead.

Pack a headlamp or flashlight for Phangern Cave. The provided torches are often weak. For the viewpoint, the earlier you go, the fewer people you'll share the narrow summit with.

The Classic Nam Song River Tubing
Enjoy the classic Vang Vieng activity: floating down the Nam Song River in a tractor inner tube. The scene is much more relaxed now. Drift peacefully, stop at riverside bars if you wish, and soak in the majestic scenery from water level.
2-4 hours (self-paced) $10 (tube rental + tuk-tuk drop-off)
Rent your tube from one of the official shops near the river. They provide a waterproof bag and return tuk-tuk. Start early to avoid the midday heat.
Lunch
The Organic Farm Cafe
Organic Lao & Western, Fresh Juices Mid-range
Afternoon
Visit the Organic Farm & Mulberry Paper Workshop
Spend your final afternoon at the Vang Vieng Organic Farm. Learn about their community projects, see how traditional Lao mulberry paper (Sa) is made, and enjoy the tranquil garden setting. It's a perfect, low-key cultural counterpoint to the morning's adventure.
1-2 hours Free (donations appreciated)
The farm is a short walk or bike ride from town along the river path. No booking needed.
Evening
Farewell Dinner with a View
Enjoy a final meal at Nam Song Garden Restaurant or Earth for fantastic Lao cuisine in a beautiful garden atmosphere, reminiscing about the weekend's adventures.

Where to Stay Tonight

Riverside (west bank) (Riverside Boutique Resort or Vang Vieng Freedom Bungalows)

For a peaceful last night with direct river access and beautiful views, slightly away from the town bustle.

When tubing, tie your tube securely to the provided rope at riverside bars, or it might float away. Also, the current is slowest in the dry season; a paddle rental ($1) can be very useful.
Day 3 Budget: $35

Practical Information

Getting Around

Vang Vieng is small and best explored on foot, by bicycle ($2-3/day), or by tuk-tuk for longer trips (e.g., to the Blue Lagoon, ~$5-10 round-trip per group). Negotiate tuk-tuk fares before getting in. For arrival/departure, minivans from Vientiane (2.5 hours) or Luang Prabang (5-6 hours) are the standard.

Book Ahead

Book your first night's accommodation in advance during peak season. Kayaking or specific guided tours can be booked a day ahead. No other major advance bookings are required.

Packing Essentials

Sturdy shoes for hiking/caving, water shoes/sandals for rivers, swimwear, quick-dry towel, headlamp, sunscreen, insect repellent, reusable water bottle (refill stations available), lightweight dry bag.

Total Budget

$120-180 for 3 days (excluding international flights)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay in dorm hostels ($5-8/night), eat exclusively at street food stalls and the night market ($2-5/meal), rent a bicycle instead of taking tuk-tuks, and skip guided tours in favor of self-exploration (except for caves where a guide is safer). Focus on free activities like hiking and public river access.

Luxury Upgrade

Stay at the Riverside Boutique Resort or Amari Vang Vieng. Hire a private guide with a car for all excursions. Enjoy fine dining at The Elephant Crossing or e.b.o. Restaurant. Charter a private longtail boat for a sunset river cruise. Add a hot air balloon ride over the karsts ($80-100).

Family-Friendly

Swap the challenging Phangern Cave for the easier Tham Chang Cave. Choose kayaking over tubing for more control with kids. Spend more time at the Blue Lagoon which is safe for swimming. The Organic Farm visit is excellent for all ages. Opt for accommodations with pools.
